Conference on Muslim Peacebuilding, Justice, and Interfaith Dialogue

The Salam Institute for Peace and Justice, which was co-founded and is directed by URI-friend Dr. Mohammed Abu-Nimer, will be hosting its second annual conference on Muslim Peacebuilding, Justice, and Interfaith Dialogue on May 5th and 6th in Washington, D.C. The event is co-sponsored by the Islamic Society of North America and the Muslim Network for Peacebuilding, Justice, and Interfaith Dialogue.

From the conference announcement:In order to continue its efforts to enhance the peacebuilding capacity of Muslim peacebuilding actors and to provide a platform to continue the discussion that started with the First Annual Conference, Salam Institute and ISNA will be holding the Second Annual Conference of MPJID on May 5th-6th 2007.

This conference aims to create an opportunity for Muslim scholars and practitioners to convene to discuss and clarify main concepts and approaches to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, human rights, democratization and development rooted in the Islamic tradition; to contribute to effective policy development in the Muslim world in the fields of governance, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding; and too provide a platform for Muslim Peacebuilding practitioners to share their experiences on the ground with the wider community of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars and practitioners in order to contribute to theory building and practice of conflict resolution in the Muslim world.

  • Successes, Lessons Learned, and Challenges facing Muslims and Muslim Organizations Working for Peace and Justice

  • Women in Islam and Peacebuilding
  • Intra-Muslim Dialogue and Peacebuilding

Call for Papers

Paper presentations on these panels and short workshops related to these themes are welcomed; suggestions for other panel topics also welcomed.
