Someone said the Sudanese have the biggest problems and the biggest smiles. How true that is. We are greeted by a number of strangers who have come to see who is on our plane. I barely recognize the area though I was here only 4 months ago. What was dry, dusty earth before is now covered with bright green grass. The villagers are cultivating their fields and the sorgham is knee-high. This area received “special treatment” during the war as it was the beginning of the rebel movement against the government of sudan. In 1993, during the peak of the fighting, there were 147 cows down from 2 million and there were no children under the age of 5 and no pregnant women. Now, new shops are being constructed in Baidit market. There is even a new “hotel” and restaurant. Despite the present famine, there is always hope here. They plant their crops in hope that their families will live to see the harvest. They build their shops in hope that they will see more development now that this long-awaited peace has come to their country. Even the cows are happy. Spring supports hope.
