URI Participation in International Day of Peace (IDP) September 21, 2007

On June 20, 2006, The Global Council Trustees, on behalf of the members of the UNITED RELIGIONS INITIATIVE (URI) throughout the world, issued a Peace Proclamation, joining with the United Nations in proclaiming September 21 as The International Day of Peace (IDP). We urge all our members to encourage all citizens of this world to work together to create peace, justice and healing for the Earth and for all living beings.

IDP LogoThe International Day of Peace, September 21, offers an opportunity for every CC to link together and be the change we want to see happen in the world! Use IDP to share the URI and to build partnerships with other organizations in your area. URI has made a substantial contribution to the global presence of IDP since 2000. With your participation, URI will have an even larger impact!

Every CC is invited to participate and to share your plans for IDP on the URI website.

Find out what CCs have planned for IDP 2007 at IDP 2007. From a peace concert in Denmark to a film gathering in SF, to UN Headquarters in NY and on to the world, URI CCs will expand the observance of the International Day of Peace. Now is the time to share your plans. Many of you have been working on this for months. Others can begin now to plan your event. Send your plans to Barbara Hartford at bhartford@uri.org to inspire others.

A global ceasefire is not just negotiated by governments. It is built by each person when nonviolence is chosen to solve a confrontation. Use IDP to choose and teach nonviolence.

We encourage all CCs to participate in honoring the International Day of Peace.

  • Observe the Minute of Silence at 12 noon (especially in schools, and at your Peace Pole if you have one nearby) and encourage activities promoting nonviolence in your region in support of the ceasefire.
  • Hold an IDP Interfaith Vigil.
  • Collect food for the needy.
  • Plant a tree.
  • Issue a press release so that people outside of your circle will know about the URI and the International Day of Peace.

Share your plans. Your activities inspire others!

May Peace Prevail on Earth,
Monica Willard and Barbara Hartford
