A Call to ACTION: Clergy Sign-on Letter

California passed AB 1493 in 2002 — a landmark law which sought to limit greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles sold in California. The bill requires all auto manufacturers use the most feasible and cost-effective methods for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks. We continue to wait for its implementation. Science tells us we can wait no longer.

Major auto manufacturers, including Toyota Motors, have brought suit against the state of California in an attempt to avoid complying with AB 1493. Ironically, Toyota has worked hard to develop a sound reputation for environmental stewardship; they arguably have much to lose by suing the state over this bill.

CIPL now circulates a sign-on letter, which we urge you to send along to your contacts. We will send the complete letter, with signatures, to Toyota Motors, asking them to withdraw from the lawsuit opposing AB 1493. Please take a moment to read the letter. Add your name to our growing number of members in the faith community who support laws to protect our planet from global warming. The deadline for signing on is June 18, 2007. The message is clear:

“As representatives from many faith traditions, we ask that Toyota withdraw its lawsuit opposing AB 1493, California’s landmark law to limit greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks.

We urge that Toyota, the world’s largest automobile manufacturer, play a leadership role in the greatest moral dilemma of our time: the race to stop the catastrophic damage that is being done to our sacred planet and its citizens by global warming.”
